For Auction we have a Spectra-Physics Model 265 Power Supply Unit with Model 165 Laser. The Spectra-Physics Model 165 and Model 265 are components of a vintage ion laser system designed for scientific and laboratory applications. The Model 165 is the ion laser head, while the Model 265 is the external power supply, or "exciter," for the system. These lasers, produced by the first commercial laser company, Spectra-Physics, were noted for their stability and reliability.
Model 165 ion laser head
The Model 165 was a versatile ion laser head capable of operating with different gases to produce multiple wavelengths.
Construction: The unit was designed to be compact and lightweight, using a beryllium oxide (BeO) plasma tube to enhance power and lifetime.
Wavelengths: Depending on the gas, it could produce light in the ultraviolet to deep red range. With argon and krypton gases, it could produce true single-line TEMoo output at various wavelengths.
Controls: It featured thumbwheel controls on the top cover for fine-tuning the wavelength and adjusting the intra-cavity aperture for power and mode control.
Intra-cavity space: The laser head included an intra-cavity space for inserting experimental accessories like etalons or gas cells for spectroscopy.
Power: It could deliver multi-wavelength power up to 4 watts.
Applications: The Model 165 was used in a variety of scientific fields, including Raman spectroscopy, holography, Brillouin scattering, and biological experiments.
Model 265 exciter/power supply
The Model 265 was the power supply designed to drive the Model 165 laser head.
Function: It provides power to the laser head and features a "fully regulated power supply".
Controls: The front panel of the Model 265 includes controls and a multi-function meter for monitoring the laser's operation.
Gas refill system: It is also equipped with an operator-controlled gas refill system for the laser tube.
Specifications: A posting on the vintage laser resource site Sci.Electronics.Repair FAQ shows the Model 265 can provide up to 10 amps to the laser tube. The power supply's input voltage requirements are 208 VAC +/-10% (phase to phase).
The Laser System has not been powered on. The System has not been tested. The Power Supply Unit comes with a key. The System has cosmetic wear such as scuffs, dust, and tape residue. Please reference included photos and model numbers for more details. The System is being sold AS IS.
