Museum display containing seven early artificial-heart, artificial-valve and circulatory-device prototypes associated with the development of the University of Utah’s artificial-heart program.
The individual exhibit labels identify pieces that include a “Kwan-Gett Prototype – University of Utah, 1970,” a “Jarvik-7 Prototype” and additional experimental heart chambers, valves and related developmental models.
Included in the lot:
- Seven labeled heart, valve and circulatory-device prototypes
- Individual identification placards
- “A Culture of Discovery” historical information panel
- Clear protective acrylic display enclosure
- White museum display pedestal
- Associated display-mounting components shown in the photographs
According to the museum’s exhibit information, the collection was donated by Dr. Don B. Olsen. Dr. Olsen was the University of Utah artificial-heart program’s head veterinarian, conducted more than 300 animal trials and was instrumental in developing the artificial heart implanted in Barney Clark in 1982. He was a member of the artificial-heart team but was not the surgeon who performed the implant. University of Utah history
These pieces are inert historical research or teaching models. They are not sterile, functional medical devices and cannot be used for clinical, diagnostic, surgical or veterinary purposes.
The prototypes have not been independently authenticated or removed from the enclosure for inspection. Attribution, dates and provenance are based upon the accompanying museum labels and records included with the lot. Prospective bidders should inspect all available documentation before bidding.
The display shows wear consistent with museum exhibition and storage. The acrylic enclosure may have scratches, scuffs or discoloration. Individual prototypes may exhibit age-related deterioration, discoloration, cracking or hardening of plastic, polyurethane, silicone, fabric and adhesive components.
Buyer must provide appropriate art-handling materials, labor and transportation. The seller will not dismantle or separately package the prototypes.
Sold as a complete display, as-is and where-is, with no guarantees or warranties.

The Buyer will make all arrangements and perform all work necessary, including packing, loading and transportation of the property. No Assistance will be provided. A daily storage fee of $10.00 may be charged for any item not removed within the 10 business days allowed and stated on the Buyer's Certificate.

Please note that upon removal of the property, all sales are final.
Description Warranty. Seller warrants to the Buyer that the property offered for sale will conform to its description. Any claim for misdescription must be made prior to removal of the property. If Seller confirms that the property does not conform to the description, Seller will keep the property and refund any money paid. The liability of the seller shall not exceed the actual purchase price of the property.
